Garret is, unfortunately, not as well thought-out as Nahmat, but I like to think he's got a lot going for him, as well as striking enjoyable contrast to Twilight Sparkle. They're both dedicated students of magic, and are each talented in their own right, but while Twilight needed a mentor to help her hone her capabilities, Garret choked under the reins of formal education, and could only develop his talents by learning on his own. So, while Twilight has the formal refinement of the most renowned magic teachers in the world, Garret developed the inventiveness, boldness and insatiable curiosity that would befit a great magical researcher.

Quick Question: Nahmat is a sort-of anagram of your name isn't it? Is she a persona or just an OC?

I'm guessing that his rapid growth in magic was caused by more than just his latent abilities. As there is a missing link in magic for him, it seems there is a missing detail in his progress...

Maybe they're both wrong. Maybe she thinks he's Gralo, and he thinks she's a monster, but the real monster hid and turned them against each other.

When you say that "Garret developed the inventiveness, boldness and insatiable curiosity that would benefit a great magical researcher", it makes it seem as though Twilight doesn't exemplify those characteristics! I know that you go on to say that education by someone else is unnecessary, but here it makes it seem as though when you're taught by a mentor or teacher, you don't develop certain beneficial characteristics. And I don't agree with that. I think a formal education is just as good or better than teaching yourself.

Oh Garret. You never mess with trans-dimensional spells. Independent education encourages creativity and boldness, but formal education can foster a helpful sense of humility. My voice teacher broke my pride -- partly by his own humility and his kindness -- and I'm grateful to him for it. Can I just compliment you on your use of color? FiM's candy-colored style means a lot of artists ignore subtleties of color, but I can see you use them to great effect: the colors on the portico that Garret walks down, the scenes where he's studying

Of course! If you do not have a complete education, or even if you think you have a complete education, you must always bear in mind you're not as wise as you think you are.

I'm glad you like how I use color! My first moment of delight was in my depiction of the summoning of Nahmat, back on page 12. Up 'til then, the comic hand been in lots of bright, happy colors, so it was a great to be able to bring in a color scheme that evoked something like fire.

I have to ask, did the rest of your comment get eaten in transit? Anyway, than you so much for the great comment! It really means a lot. :D

I'm probably tardy to the party, but I'm calling it now:

Neither character is the evil one, and a devious third party exists while the two cast suspicion on each other.

Clever... Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't notice until you did. Now that I think about it though, your theory is sounding exceptionally good. I believe he did fuse himself with Gralo, though most likely unintentionally, and has no idea it even happened. In any case, I feel that'd be a much more interesting turn of events than him just turning out to really be the bad guy the whole time. In any case, loving the comic so far :)

i already wasn't that fond of Rarity, but calling another sentient creature a Beast really just bugs me... even if you don't like someone, that's no reason to insult them like that. great comic though :)

Last Rarity saw of Nahmat, she fed Fluttershy a psychic hoof-nail sandwich. She hasn't had the chance to see Nahmat in the more positive light we've been getting to see her in yet, so I think Rarity's feelings are perfectly legitimate.

I guess, but her normal speaking voice is one that just grates... i mean, it fits the character, but still. And i guess i just expect the Element of Generosity to be a bit more generous with letting other people explain themselves first or at least giving them a second chance. Then again, she did kick a manticore in the face that already had a thorn in it's paw...

In Rarity's defense, the manticore attacked HER. Also, neither she, nor the other ponies knew the manticore had a thorn in it's paw, until Fluttershy pointed it out.

Also, to be fair, Nat really didn't leave a very good first impression in her first appearance.

true enough. i still don't care that much for Rarity... she has her moments, but for the most part i just think she's too fussy and judgemental. Though that may be just me being too judgemental... who knows?

Look on the bright side, characters in other media, who share similar personality traits with Rarity (being shallow, fussy, materialistic, etc.) tend to be WAY more annoying and unlikeable, with so few redeeming qualities you begin to question why the main characters even hang out with this person. Lauren knew this well, which is why Rarity is portrayed in a different light. Despite possessing those traits, she has proven many times to be a much deeper character than the norm. TBH, she's one of my favorites ponies for this very reason.

With that said, I can understand why some people aren't fond of her, though she could have turned out MUCH WORSE.

agreed. She's not half as bad as she could be, and in some instances i have found myself genuinely touched by the things she just flat out gives others, as well as the extent she goes to in order to please her friends. still, i believe it is safe to say that she is and always will be a drama queen.
