Part of the inspiration for the kind of destruction Gralo causes was taken from The Magic of Reality by Richard Dawkins, where near the beginning of the book, he talks about traditional magic (fairy-godmother stuff), stage magic (slight-of-hand stuff) and poetic magic (it's-good-to-be-alive! stuff). Friendship is Magic, being a show about magic of the third kind (although the first and second are dealt with throughout the show as well), I wanted Gralo to be a threat by those terms.

My Little Pony (c) Hasbro,
Friendship is Magic was created by and assistants.
That would be a match to watch. I think that Discord could outsmart him with all that "out-of-reality" style of his magic (and I guess that, since he is so "out of the box", he would have seen that Gralo was using Garret as a disguise). After all, I think Discord is much more powerful than he seems. About the magic itself... I don't know. I THINK Gralo wouldn't be able to do anything... We've seen in this comic, in the next pages, that there isn't really a sun or moon (according to Gralo), BUT Nahmat said that Gralo can't touch the magic of Nature. My idea is that, since Discord IS Chaos itself (is not like his magic comes from chaos, he is it), he is part of Nature and therefore, Gralo wouldn't be able to touch his magic.
And if he tried, being Discord's magic and all, I wouldn't be surprised if he exploded. In a "watch out for what you eat" kind of way.
I'm still not entirely behind Gralo being this tough, but I still have to give props for how utterly chilling the idea is that he drained the mane-six not just of their magic but of all there emotional drive and passion as well. The idea that Twilight has to force herself to care about things when all she can feel is emptiness is pervasively creepy, though also speaks greatly of her character that she can even if only barely act in spite of it.
Actually, thinking of it as first and foremost that he drained their emotions, I could be quite a bit less bothered by his seeming immunity to the Elements of Harmony. Without emotions they would have no friendship, and without friendship there would be no magic. So it wouldn't be so much that he overpowered the quote "Greatest magic known to ponydom!" but rather that he circumvented it by cutting of the emotions fueling that power. Maybe that's not what was intended, but I think that will be my head canon.
